Blackfoot Diner. A place where the customers are the very folks the Notley NDP claim to represent.A guy walks up to United Conservative Leader Jason Kenney sitting in a booth this busy lunch hour. The man says he works in the oil business, started in 1978 and has seen a hell of a lot.
“This government we have right now, you can put lipstick on a pig and it’s still a pig. You know what I’m saying?”The man leaves. Come to think of it, was he talking about the Trudeau government or the Notley NDP government?
Likely both, since Trudeau and Notley were, until recently, two peas in a pod. That triggers a question.
Does Kenney think Notley really understands what’s going on, the fear and loathing, the hopelessness and anger?Kenney says no but he doesn’t stop there.
“Watching the NDP act like champions of the oil industry is like watching a vegan try to run a steakhouse,” says the UCP leader.“They don’t know what they’re doing or why they’re doing it but they finally figured out somehow they have to pretend.”
Kenney says we have to be honest. The Alberta NDP never thought they’d be the government. Their role was attacking “the corrosive influence of Big Oil on Alberta’s political culture.”
“Now for them to get up every morning and pretend to masquerade as the great champions of oilfield workers …” says Kenney.
“I almost feel sorry for them. It’s slightly pathetic. And, try as they might, no one’s buying it.”Kenney once again points to Notley in her early days as premier, calling Alberta the “embarrassing cousin no one wants to talk about.”
“She was embarrassed by the Alberta she’s now pretending to defend. Now she’s pretending to be an evangelist for pipelines.”Kenney is on a roll. Must be the diner coffee.
“The funniest part, you just have to laugh, is the new tough-on-Trudeau talk.”Again, the United Conservative leader says Notley and the NDP mocked and ridiculed his fight-back stance against Trudeau.
“Now in the eleventh hour, before an election, they’ve suddenly become newfound converts to defending Alberta’s interests. It would be laughable if it wasn’t serious.”
And the biggest mistake, as the whole province knows, is Notley teaming up with Trudeau, who never had Alberta’s interests in mind.
You can see and hear and feel Notley’s frustration as time and time again Trudeau lets the premier and her NDP government twist in the wind, the smiley photo ops of the past a bitter memory.
While we’re at it, have you noticed you don’t hear Notley budget boss Smilin’ Joe Ceci talk as much about green shoots, those supposed signs of growth in Alberta.
“I don’t buy their happy talk about recovery. I don’t meet anybody who is feeling it,” says Kenney.
For more than a few of those opposing him, he is not just a person with different ideas or even some character they dislike.
“They do it to conservatives who win. They didn’t do it to Joe Clark but they clearly did it to Stephen Harper. They didn’t do it to all the squishy Tory leaders who lost elections but Margaret Thatcher was demonized.”
They tried it with Ralph Klein and he won landslides, while his opponents blamed everybody but themselves for his victories.
“That stuff doesn’t register in the real world. There’s maybe a thousand over-caffeinated lefties on Twitter who excite themselves into a hatefest,” says Kenney.“That is about as far away from the reality I encounter as you could imagine.”
And before defenders of the Notley NDP government whine over their kale salad or cry into the Nicaraguan fair trade coffee and complain about how I’m such a big meanie because I talk to Kenney, please take note.
I offered Notley a straight-up question-and-answer interview as has been granted to me by every premier no matter the political stance.
